CAPITOL REPORT-STANLEY COX

April 18, 2009

Dear Friends;

I thought you would want to know what news outlets are saying about House Joint Resolution 10 (HJR10) which was filed by me and was passed out of the Missouri House on April 8th.  The article which appeared in yesterday's Wall Street Journal can be found below and at the following link:

HJR10 makes the process of selection of appellate judges more open and reduces the influence of lawyers in the selection process.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Dear Constituent:

            Let me thank you for the opportunity to serve as your State Representative.   I have worked very hard during these past two years as your public servant in Jefferson City.  I know that we are facing challenging times ahead with the sputtering economy, high fuel prices and rising crime rate.   I would ask for your support for re-election, and would like to highlight some important legislation which I have co-sponsored to address these challenging times.

            First of all, House Bill 444 eliminates income taxes for Social Security Retirees and retired School Teachers, Firemen and Policemen.  It does not seem logical to double tax retirees on their retirement benefits.  Additionally, the School Safety & Liability Act is written to protect public school teachers from frivolous lawsuits.

            Since the Federal Government has failed to stop illegal immigrants at the borders, we passed tough illegal immigration reformthat stops taxpayer paid handouts to illegal immigrants and enforces strict penalties on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.    Additionally, I am very pleased to have supported the November Ballot Amendment that if passed will establish English as our official language.

            I was the chief sponsor this year of a law that provides additional protection from identity theft and helps victims restore their good name.  This House Bill 1384 was the most significant consumer protection legislation passed this year.  I changed the Amber Alert law to better protect our children from sexual predators.  I worked with my colleagues to provide our citizens real property tax relief.   As Vice-Chair of the Election Committee, I worked hard to protect the integrity of the ballot box.

            When I first sought this office, I pledged to always support full funding of public education.  I can report to you that state government has budgeted full support of the education funding formula for each of the last two years.   With my support the General Assembly provided State Fair Community College $2 million in new funding.  With uncertain times ahead, you need an advocate for education in Jefferson City.

            Probably the most significant legislation passed over the last two years relates to economic development.  A few years ago Missouri led the nation in jobs lost.   Over the last four years, we have changed course, fixed a broken system, cut taxes on working families, and this new pro-jobs environment has produced tens of thousands of new family supporting jobs and protected our jobs and families.

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                STANLEY COX

                                                                                                118th District Representative
